Entries for the 2018 Norma K Hemming Award, covering eligible work from 2016 and 2017, closed on Thursday 25 January, 2018. It is with great pleasure we announce the following details about the entries.
In the new short form category (work up to 17,500 words), 68 entries were received.
In the expanded long form category, 62 entries were received. This included two anthologies, two collections, one graphic novel, eight novellas, four stage plays and 45 novel length works.
Entries were received from a variety of sources, including major publishers, small presses, and self-published authors.
The jurors are now examining the entries against the Norma K Hemming Award criteria of excellence in the exploration of themes of race, gender, sexuality, class or disability in a published speculative fiction work.
It is anticipated that shortlists will be released in April, with the Award presentation to be held at the Continuum science fiction convention in Melbourne over the June long weekend (8-11 June, 2018).
The Australian Science Fiction Foundation and the Norma K Hemming team would like to thank the Australian speculative fiction community for the support shown over the past months during the transition to the Award new structure.
